Threats to street children in Pakistan

Pakistan being an overpopulated country suffers a lot of problem to accommodate the population within the means the country sustains. This overrated population has led Pakistan in some serious problems which cannot be ignored. According to Pakistan Demographic Profile, Pakistan accounts to have 1.9 million rate of population. Total dependency ratio accounts to be 61.8%. Birth rates accounts to be 23.76 over 1000 population, whereas death rate accounts to be only 6.69 over 1000 population.

This colossal difference between birth and death rates forces the country to get overpopulated and spin-off. This in return creates problem within the country for people to manage themselves in the given resources. This is how poverty line pushes itself up from the previous line. According to a report published on May 19 2013 in Business Recorder; sixty percent of the people in Pakistan accounts to live below Poverty line. This report was entitled by World Development Indicators (WDI). WDI economic indicators forecasted the current fiscal economic growth which accounts to be at 3.9 percent.

All these figures impose high extent of threat for the people living in Pakistan. Providence of shelter, education, clothing and food have become burdensome and challenging here. Due to the rising level of poverty and inadequacy in the country, forces families to make their children work. Both males and females are pushed towards working and doing labor in any certain way from which they can earn money and support their families. In Pakistan 3.3 million of the population that accounts to be around 40 million, children are reported to be economically active including both males and females.

A general conception of this poverty clarifies the rising problem where people do not have resources and ways to get themselves educated or learned. Pakistan being strike by such problem makes space for people to indulge themselves in certain activities which are not healthy.
The first and foremost problem occurs here are of drug users which lead to Human Trafficking. Children who are sent out for work to earn from their early ages somehow become independent. They try to impose their life in such a way which can help them earn money, so they can accommodate their families. These children are usually known as street children in Pakistan. According to the 2011 survey, there are 1.5 million street children in Pakistan.

When children without knowing the pros and cons of life and activities in which they are involved in accept them as the only way of their life puts themselves in an awkward situation. The use of drugs for them has never been safe. These children usually don’t have a safety measure when they are using these drugs. They share their instruments like syringes from which they inject themselves. According to the report published by Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) in 2011 Pakistan has one of the Asia’s highest HIV prevalence rate. 90% people who suffer from HIV/AIDS are under the age of 25 and almost all of them are either severely addicted to drugs or they are more likely street children who use drugs to make themselves satisfied from their existing lives

Now the question is what leads these children to use of drugs. The first and foremost problem exist in Pakistan is Poverty which drives children to work out all alone. Among these children 90% of the children are subjected to human trafficking in which are mostly forced to serve themselves as slaves to other people. They are even subjected to sexual assault which remarks their life in depression. Instead of dealing with this matter, they try to cover it up by the use of drugs. Not only females but males are even inflicted with these problems.

Another problem observed in Pakistani society is that we consider children and their problems on a very minor basis. Parents ignore them because they themselves are not aware of these signs. Children who are exposed to this kind of problem hesitate to tell their parents, the main reason for this scenario is the knowledge which is not properly devised to the children. Children who should be taught about good and bad signs are not encouraged to learn it. There is no self-defense training provided in schools which can make these children understand and acknowledged about these problems; so when someone goes through this problem can deal with it instead of going towards drugs or depression.

Mindset of Pakistani societies is to set up a social class and range in which people can differentiate among them. According to the previous law, any harassment and physical assault report was not allowed to register until the medical report is in hands and until the child who suffers from this does not intensely bleep up. But this law changed some years back; any accused who is involved regarding this subject is arrested on the claim, and if any specific prove against the guilt comes on the screen; the accused is charged with 50000 cash and 1 year in prison. In Pakistan 35000 children every year drops out school because of corporal punishments.

Saving the rights of children nowadays have become increasingly important and some of the key workers are devoting their time and services to make this problem as minimized as they can. Organizations like Shezad Roy organization, Dost Foundation and Azad Foundation devotes their services to solve these problems but these organizations needs continuous government support, so children who are being sponsored and funded by these organization do not go somewhere else or to the same platform from which they came from; only because there are no funded or limited funds available to them.

People have never heard the concept of Street Motivators. It’s basically organizations which supports those children who lives on street and are exposed to sexual harassment threats and are subjected to physical assault. They make them believe that they are not alone. It’s a small scale organization which is handled by those people who have gone through these things personally. They also give them food, talk to them about their life and habits. They motivate them to let go the bad habits; they even eat their food and share things to help them live a better life without any depression and problems.

This problem is making a constant place due to the over rating population growth, which has been increasing every year. If we talk about the solutions for this problem; the first and foremost solution is to spread out awareness among children for the use of drugs and the danger signs which could make children aware about what is coming to them. Secondly, functional mode of education and knowledge regarding sexual harassment and physical signs and postures should be accessible to children under the understanding of their parent and teacher to some extent, so they can stop these things to happen in future. Thirdly, government needs to support those organizations in a systematic way that devotes their services to these children. This is how Poverty level could decrease and all above stated problem can come to an end.
