Senate approves contempt of Court Bill 2012

ISLAMABAD: Senate has approved the contempt of Court Bill 2012. The approval came late on Wednesday after the opposition had walked-out from the Senate session to show their dissent over the issue. The Bill has already been passed by the National Assembly.

The bill was presented within the Senate on Wednesday evening. The Senate session was headed by Nayer Bukhari.

Law Minister Farooq H. Naek, after suspending rules, presented the Contempt of Court Bill 2012 within the Senate.

Earlier, PML-N's Ishaq Dar had stated that the government wanted to get the Bill approved before Wednesday mid-night in order to present a copy of the Bill within the Supreme Court. He further added that if the Bill would get approved, PML-N would challenge it in the Court.

Opposition Leader, Maulana Abdul Gahfoor Hyderi said that the government was unable to remove their concerns, hence JUI-F would not support the government over the issue.

"It is for the Parliament to decide its role and all institutions should work within their jurisdiction," stated ANP's Azam Hoti.

Aitzaz Ahsan had stated that the government should re-consider the Bill, he further added that decisions taken in quick time frame might lead to negative effects for the government.

"If today, this law gives immunity to the PM and the President, it would turn the other way round once the opposition takes over the government," stated Aitzaz. "If Courts were to be consulted in future with respect to this law, they (Courts) would state that the law is your own invention," added Aitzaz Ahsan.
