Pakistan has more nuclear warheads than India : SIPRI

A report by the SIPRI (Stockholm International Peace Research Institute) states that currently, Pakistan is in possession of more nuclear warheads than India. Aaj News reported.

According to the research report, Pakistan currently possesses 90 to 110 nuclear warheads whereas India is in possession of around 80 to 100 nuclear warheads.

According to the SIPRI Yeabook report of 2012, India and Pakistan both, are working to increase their nuclear arsenals by improving the sizes and sophistication of their nuclear warheads.  "Pakistan's development of new short-range ballistic missiles suggests that its military planning has evolved to include contingencies for the use of 'battlefield nuclear weapons'. This may lead to nuclear warheads being deployed on a more launch-ready posture", the report said.

According to the yearbook report, eight countries currently possess two thousand (2,000) ready-to-launch nuclear weapons from a total of four thousand four hundred (4,400) nuclear warheads, globally.  "If all nuclear warheads are counted, the USA, Russia, UK, France, China, India, Pakistan and Israel together possess a total of approximately 19,000 nuclear weapons", says the SIPRI yearbook.

Russia has the most number of nuclear warheads which stands at 10,000. While America is on second with 8,000 warheads in its possession.

According to the research report of SIPRI, "China appears to be expanding the size of its nuclear forces, albeit slowly." Currently China has 240 warheads, just below France who possesses 300 warheads.

The report also published a list of highest importers and exporters of major Arms in 2010.

In the list USA and RUSSIA remain the top two exporters of major Arms in the world supplying more than 50% of world's weapons supply.

India was listed as the top importer of major arms with a 10% global share, while Pakistan stood third with a 5% share in the global import of major Arms.
