A three-member Pakistan Judo squad will participate in three back-to-back international events at the Commonwealth Judo Championship in Cardiff, Grand Slam in France and World Cup in Austria.

The three Pakistani judokas will participate in the Commonwealth Judo Championship (CJC) for the first time to be held in Cardiff (UK) from January 22 to 27 followed by Grand Slam in France from February 3 to 6 and then the World Cup from February 11 to 12.

The three-member squad includes Shah Hussain Shah, his brother Shah Zeb and Karamat Butt will take part in the said event. Shah Hussain and Shah Zeb, sons of former Pakistan's boxing legend and Olympics bronze medalist Hussain Shah, will go to England from Japan while Butt will be leaving from Islamabad.

Masood Ahmad, secretary, Pakistan Judo Federation (PJF) who was a happy man for the team's participation in the event told APP on Friday that it is a great for us that our judokas are participating in the CJC for the first time after obtaining membership only last year.

"All our three judokas are brilliant and are capable of bringing laurels to the country," Ahmed said adding that Butt clinched a gold medal from the Commonwealth Championship gold medalist in the final during the South Asian Judo Championship held here at Pakistan Sports Complex last year.

Ahmed said that Shah Hussain has already proved his worth by performing well in several international events. Shah Zeb fought for three minutes and 24 seconds in -66kg fight against a player from Belgium in the Grand Slam held last year.

"After featuring in the CJC, the trio will participate in the Grand Slam and will then undergo training in one of the world's top three academies in Paris for five to six days," he said. After that they would proceed to Austria by train where the judokas would feature in the World Cup," he said.

"The Pakistan Judo Federation (PJF) wants to brush up our judokas as our aim is to succeed in the South Asian and Asian Games," he said adding that the PJF has requested the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) for financial assistance.
