Palestinian factions agree unity premier: mediator
Palestinian have reached agreement on who will head a promised national unity government, an independent MP who has been brokering talks said on Thursday.
President Mahmud Abbas's Fatah and the Hamas movement which heads the current government have "solved all problems regarding the name of the prime minister," Mustafa Barghuti said.
"This is no longer a problem," he told reporters in the West Bank town of Ramallah.
"The announcement of a new cabinet could take place within two weeks but the prime minister may be announced in the coming days."
On Wednesday, current prime minister Ismail Haniya said that the talks on a national unity government had been suspended after Israeli shelling killed 18 people, mostly women and children, in the north Gaza town of Beit Hanun.
Abbas has been in Gaza since late on Monday in a bid to reach agreement with the Hamas-led government on a new administration acceptable to Western donors.
Barghuti told reporters that the unity government would be "of a new style" and "will be independent from any faction."
The Palestinian territories have been plunged into economic crisis by the West's suspension of direct aid since the Hamas-led government rejected calls to recognise Israel and past peace deals when it took power in March.
