Funeral prayers were offered on Friday for three Lahore policemen, including a sub-inspector, who were killed in separate firing incidents a day earlier.
Separately, police said two suspected militants linked to the attacks were killed in an encounter near Sheikhupura.
The police have registered cases concerning both incidents and identified the third suspect allegedly involved in the attacks as 32-year-old Tariq, according to police sources.
The funeral prayers for Sub-Inspector Adeel Ashiq, Head Constable Asad and Constable Haris Saleem were offered at Police Lines Qila Gujjar Singh.
The bodies of the three policemen were later transported to their native areas under full police protocol for burial.
The funeral was attended by the Lahore Corps Commander, Punjab Finance Minister, chief secretary, home secretary, Punjab Inspector General of Police, Lahore Capital City Police Officer and senior military, police and law enforcement officials.
A police contingent presented a guard of honour to the martyrs.
The Lahore Corps Commander laid a floral wreath on behalf of Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir.
Civil and military leaders also paid tribute to the slain personnel and offered prayers for them.
The Lahore Corps Commander, Punjab IGP and other senior officials met the families of the deceased officers and assured them that the families would not be left alone and that their welfare and care would be ensured.
According to a police spokesperson, the three personnel were killed in firing by suspects the previous night.
Police said Adeel Ashiq had allegedly received threats by phone from Rehan Butt, against whom a case had been registered on the sub-inspector’s complaint.
Rehan’s brother Faizan Butt was allegedly killed in a Counter Terrorism Department encounter in 2024, following which Rehan developed a grudge against the police, according to police.
Police said the father-son duo who allegedly fled after killing three policemen and injuring others in Badami Bagh and Nawan Kot on the night of August 13 were killed in an alleged encounter near Sheikhupura.
The suspects were identified as Rehan Butt and his father, Fayyaz Butt.
A case over the alleged encounter was registered at Muridke police station on the complaint of Inspector Aamir Afzal, station house officer of Saddar Muridke police station.
The FIR includes charges under the Anti-Terrorism Act, explosives-related provisions, murder and attempted murder, among other sections.
According to the FIR, three armed men entered the home of a man identified as Abdul Hafeez and held his wife and three children hostage at gunpoint.
After receiving information, police surrounded the house and called on the suspects to surrender.
The suspects allegedly opened fire on the police, prompting retaliatory fire. The exchange also damaged a police vehicle, according to the FIR.
After the firing stopped, two bodies were found in the courtyard of the house, with weapons lying nearby, the FIR stated.
Police sources said the third suspect allegedly involved in the Lahore attacks has been identified as 32-year-old Tariq, who is from Bagh in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
According to sources, Tariq was in contact with Rehan Butt and had been staying at his house for some time. The two had also met on several occasions, sources said.
Police reportedly obtained Tariq’s details through the Hotel Eye system. A case had also been registered against him at Ravi Road police station under sections 13/20/65.
Sources said Tariq separated from Rehan and his father, Fayyaz, near the Ravi-Rayan drain.
Police teams are conducting raids at various locations to arrest him. Further investigation is also underway to establish the suspects’ criminal activities and identify any other possible accomplices.
Another CCTV footage of the firing incidents in Badami Bagh and Nawan Kot’s Yateem Khana Chowk has also emerged.
The footage reportedly shows all three suspects opening fire.
According to police, the incident took place at around 8pm when three armed men opened fire on personnel deployed for security duty. One policeman was killed and two others were injured.
The suspects allegedly snatched weapons and a government vehicle from a security guard before fleeing.
A separate case has also been registered over the incident on the complaint of Sub-Inspector Mohsin Shehzad. The case includes charges related to terrorism, murder and attempted murder, among others.
