A newly formed eight-member investigation team probing the mysterious death of Karachi businessman Mir Raza Ali has recorded statements from several police officers and personnel and inspected key locations linked to the case.
The team, headed by DIG Investigation Aamir Farooqi, held a meeting at Ferozabad police station on Thursday that lasted nearly three hours and 45 minutes.
According to investigation sources, a team from the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC), which is providing technical assistance to the police, also attended the meeting.
The investigators recorded statements from the police team that had reached the scene after being informed that Mir Raza’s body had been found. Officers and personnel up to the rank of deputy superintendent of police were also questioned.
After the meeting, the investigation team visited the crime scene with the SHO of Gulistan-e-Johar police station and conducted a detailed inspection.
The team also visited a nursery near the crime scene and a guest house considered suspicious in the investigation. Statements were recorded from the nursery gardener and members of the police team that had first reached the scene.
DIG Aamir Farooqi also closely examined Mir Raza’s route before his death as part of the investigation.
The team later visited Mir Raza’s kitchen and inspected different areas before returning to the crime scene.
Mir Raza’s body was found in Karachi’s Gulistan-e-Johar area on July 29, after which an initial three-member Sindh Police team began investigating the case.
Initial police statements and the first post-mortem report had pointed towards suicide. However, the family expressed a lack of confidence in the post-mortem findings and the earlier investigation, prompting authorities to order a fresh probe.
A second post-mortem conducted after the exhumation strengthened suspicions that Mir Raza may have been murdered. The new investigation team is now examining the case from multiple angles.
Speaking informally to the media after the meeting at Ferozabad police station, DIG Investigation Aamir Farooqi declined to share details of the investigation.
“Investigation is underway. We will share [details] with the media later,” he said.
