Inspector General of Sindh Police Javed Alam Odho has acknowledged clear lapses in the investigation into the high-profile death of young Karachi businessman Mir Raza, particularly in the medico-legal process, and vowed action against those found responsible.

Speaking to the media in Karachi after meeting office-bearers of the Sindh Bar Council on Wednesday, Odho said he did not want to comment on the facts of the case at this stage, as the investigation was still underway.

“However, there have been clear lapses by the medico-legal office in this case,” he said, adding that no one involved in any negligence would be spared.

The IG said the investigation was now being conducted in light of the medical board’s findings, as earlier investigators had been working on the basis of the first medico-legal report.

He said shortcomings had occurred at different levels and assured that corrective measures would be taken.

Odho pointed out that the victim’s parents had expressed satisfaction with the ongoing investigation, adding that the issue of alleged pressure had stemmed from a misunderstanding.

“We are all part of the same community and the same criminal justice system,” he said, stressing that every institution and individual involved had to understand and fulfil their responsibilities.

He acknowledged that some lapses had occurred on the police side as well, saying the police had the responsibility of building a case and ensuring that those responsible were brought to justice.

He said all relevant institutions needed to work together to resolve shortcomings in the criminal justice system.

The Sindh police chief also said the department had taken disciplinary action against more than 27,000 personnel so far, stressing that accountability was essential for strengthening the criminal justice system.

“If we do not perform our duties properly, everyone will suffer,” he said, adding that a stronger system would help restore public confidence and prevent situations such as protests or blockades of police stations.
