US Representative Ilhan Omar won the Democratic primary for Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District on Tuesday, according to US media projections, securing a decisive victory over several challengers.

Omar, a fourth-term Democrat representing a district centred on Minneapolis, secured more than 80% of the vote, CBS News reported.

With more than 95% of ballots counted, unofficial results showed Omar leading with 122,640 votes, followed by former federal prosecutor Julie Trang Le with 10,201 and Latonya T. Reeves with 9,131, according to The New York Times.

Omar’s other Democratic primary challengers were Abena McKenzie and Nate Schluter.

The victory puts Omar in a strong position as she seeks another term representing the heavily Democratic district.

Meanwhile, John Nagel was projected to win the Republican primary for the seat with 52.1% of the vote.
