Karachi police have raised serious concerns over the handling of the initial post-mortem examination of young entrepreneur Mir Raza Ali Khan, saying irregularities in the medico-legal process had affected the investigation.

According to police, the medico-legal officer at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), Dr Osama Sheikh, prepared the post-mortem report without physically examining the body, relying instead on photographs.

Investigators said the lapse had created ambiguity in the case and adversely affected the investigation as well as the victim’s family.

Police maintained that an opinion based solely on photographs could not be treated as legally conclusive and that the final determination of the cause of death and other medical findings would be made by the medical board under the prescribed legal procedure.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sindh Javed Alam Odho said investigators had worked extensively on the case and had successfully traced all aspects of the investigation.

He added that the police had no objection to the formation of a medical board and would proceed with the investigation in line with its findings.

Police also noted that the interim post-mortem report had been submitted without objection but stressed that the final cause of death would be determined by the relevant medical authorities.

They said exhumation could be carried out, if required, with court approval on the recommendation of the medical board.
