Pakistan tightened their grip on the second Test against the West Indies on Tuesday after Abdullah Shafique’s unbeaten 160 and a dominant spin display left the hosts reeling at the close of day three at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain.

The West Indies finished the day on 103-6 in their second innings, leading by just 60 runs with only four wickets in hand.

Justin Greaves was unbeaten on one as Pakistan moved into a commanding position heading into the penultimate day.

Earlier, Pakistan posted 387 in their first innings to secure a valuable 43-run lead, thanks largely to Abdullah’s marathon knock and useful lower-order contributions.

Resuming on 266-2, Abdullah and captain Babar Azam looked set to build an even bigger partnership after extending their overnight stand.

However, Babar fell just short of a century when he was run out for 88 following a direct hit from Brandon King.

The Pakistan skipper struck 10 fours and a six in his 147-ball innings, while his 183-run third-wicket partnership with Abdullah laid the foundation for the tourists’ first-innings advantage.

The West Indies fought back briefly with three quick wickets as debutant Awais Zafar, Salman Ali Agha and Mohammad Rizwan departed in quick succession.

Awais was bowled for one by Jomel Warrican, Salman fell lbw without scoring to Shamar Joseph, while Rizwan made 18 before Warrican struck again.

Unfazed by the collapse, Abdullah continued to anchor the innings and found valuable support from Sajid Khan.

The pair added 59 runs for the seventh wicket, with Sajid contributing a crucial 30 to push Pakistan beyond the hosts’ first-innings total.

Abdullah reached his 150 with a towering six off Kavem Hodge before remaining unbeaten on 160 from 323 deliveries, an innings decorated with 15 fours and three sixes.

Warrican wrapped up the innings by claiming the final three wickets in four deliveries to finish with impressive figures of 6-112, but Pakistan had already secured a significant first-innings lead.

The West Indies made a steady start to their second innings, reaching 40 without loss before Pakistan’s spinners turned the match on its head.

Sajid Khan provided the breakthrough by trapping Tagenarine Chanderpaul lbw for 17 before clean bowling Amir Jangoo for 13 to leave the hosts at 62-2.

Left-arm spinner Ali Usman then joined the attack, dismissing Kavem Hodge for 34 after Pakistan successfully reviewed an lbw decision.

Sajid struck again to remove Shai Hope for 15 before dismissing nightwatchman Jayden Seales for a duck, reducing the West Indies to 102-5.

Pakistan capped a dominant final session when Ali Usman dismissed captain Roston Chase for 17 with the last ball of the day, leaving the hosts under mounting pressure.

Sajid finished the day with outstanding figures of 4-32 from 12 overs, taking his match tally to eight wickets, while Ali Usman returned 2-29 from 16.5 economical overs.

With a slender West Indies lead and only four wickets remaining, Pakistan will head into day four as overwhelming favourites to force a result and level the series.
