The All Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance on Monday announced a nationwide strike from August 8 in protest against rising fuel prices and what it described as unsustainable operating costs.

Speaking at a press conference in Karachi, representatives of various transport associations warned that the movement of goods across the country will come to a complete halt if their demands were not met.

Speaking on the occasion, transport alliance president Malik Shahzad Awan said transporters would suspend the transportation of goods nationwide from August 8 to protest against rising fuel prices and “unsustainable operating costs.”

He said transporters could no longer continue their business due to the increasing prices of diesel and petrol, and demanded that the government abolish the daily fuel price adjustment mechanism and revert to fixing petroleum product prices on a monthly basis.

Awan also called on the government to reverse the recent increases in petrol and diesel prices, restore toll tax rates to their June 2024 level, and abolish the 7% withholding tax imposed on the goods transport sector.

The alliance warned that freight operations across Pakistan would remain suspended until their concerns were addressed.
