Monsoon rains have triggered a series of deadly roof collapse incidents in Lahore over the past month, killing at least 29 people and prompting authorities to issue fresh warnings over the dangers posed by dilapidated buildings.

The latest tragedy occurred late Wednesday night in Kotli Pir Abdul Rehman, Baghbanpura, where the roof of a three-storey house collapsed, leaving 11 people dead and six others injured.

According to the district administration, a birthday party was underway on the upper floor when the roof, constructed with T-R girders, gave way.

The incident is the latest in a string of roof collapse accidents linked to heavy monsoon rains.

On July 27, the roof of a mud house in Pathan Colony on Shalimar Road collapsed, injuring three people.

Earlier, on July 25, a dilapidated roof caved in at the Railway Colony in Garhi Shahu, killing a man, his wife and their daughter, while another child was injured.

On July 2, the roof of an under-construction building collapsed during expansion work at a private school in Baghbanpura, killing one child and injuring four others, including labourers and passers-by.

The deadliest incident occurred on June 30 in Kahna, where the roof of a private tuition centre collapsed, claiming the lives of 14 children and injuring eight others, including a female teacher.

Taking note of the incidents, Rescue 1122 and the district administration have urged residents to stay away from old and unsafe buildings during periods of heavy rainfall.

The provincial authorities have ordered an immediate survey of all dilapidated buildings in Lahore and directed officials to relocate residents from high-risk buildings to safer locations.
