At least 29 people have been killed and 203 others injured in rain-related incidents across Punjab during the ongoing monsoon season, according to a report released by the Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) on Sunday.

The damage assessment report said that 52 houses suffered partial damage, while six livestock animals were killed during the current spell of monsoon rains.

According to the PDMA, most fatalities were caused by the collapse of dilapidated buildings, old rooftops and mud houses, as well as lightning strikes and electrocution.

In view of the third spell of the monsoon, PDMA Director General Umar Abbas directed all district administrations to remain on high alert, warning of a heightened risk of urban flooding and flash floods.

He instructed all deputy commissioners to ensure the enforcement of Section 144 along rivers, streams and seasonal nullahs to prevent public access to hazardous areas.

The PDMA said that, on the instructions of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, the injured are being provided with the best available medical treatment.

Under the Punjab government’s compensation policy, the families of those killed in the rain-related incidents are being provided financial assistance ranging from Rs1 million to Rs5 million.

The PDMA also urged the public to take precautionary measures during the monsoon season, advising people to avoid living in mud or structurally unsafe buildings and to keep children away from electricity poles and low-lying areas to reduce the risk of accidents.
