A state-of-the-art hybrid energy vessel, M.V. Grande Shanghai, has berthed at Karachi Port, marking another milestone in Pakistan’s maritime sector as it delivers the country’s first-ever Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) shipment of more than 2,000 electric vehicles (EVs).
The 220-metre vessel docked at the Karachi Gateway Terminal Multipurpose Limited (KGTML) terminal of the Karachi Port Trust (KPT), following the government’s approval of RoRo shipments of electric vehicles.
The Grande Shanghai is equipped with advanced hybrid energy technology, making it one of the most environmentally friendly cargo vessels operating in the region.
The vessel features 5 megawatt-hours of lithium-ion battery capacity, enabling it to operate with zero emissions while berthed at the port. It is also fitted with 2,500 square metres of solar panels, further reducing its environmental footprint.
Designed to combine high cargo capacity with environmental sustainability, the hybrid vessel represents a new generation of green shipping technology aimed at lowering emissions in global maritime transport.
Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry had earlier described the arrival of the vessel as a significant milestone for Pakistan’s maritime and logistics sectors.
He said the successful handling of the country’s first RoRo shipment of electric vehicles reflected the growing capability of Pakistan’s port infrastructure to manage specialised cargo operations in line with international standards.
The minister noted that RoRo vessels are purpose-built to transport wheeled cargo, allowing vehicles to be driven directly on and off the ship. This system reduces cargo handling time, improves operational safety and increases port efficiency compared with conventional cargo vessels.
He added that the successful berthing of M.V. Grande Shanghai demonstrated Karachi Port Trust’s commitment to modernising port operations through efficient, technology-driven logistics while strengthening Pakistan’s integration into the global clean mobility and sustainable transport supply chain.
The government has reiterated its commitment to supporting initiatives that enhance the maritime sector and improve the country’s connectivity with international shipping networks.
