Security forces foiled a major terrorist attack in South Waziristan’s Wana area after destroying an explosives-laden vehicle intended for a suicide bombing during an intelligence-based operation, security sources said on Saturday.
According to the sources, the operation targeted a vehicle packed with explosives before it could be used in a planned terrorist attack, preventing a potentially large-scale tragedy in Wana and nearby areas.
The sources said that security forces had kept the suspected suicide vehicle under surveillance for three consecutive days and waited until it had moved away from populated areas before engaging it, ensuring the safety of civilians.
The explosives-filled vehicle was destroyed during the operation, while a motorcycle carrying explosives was also neutralised.
One militant, belonging to the Fitna Al Khwarij group, was killed and five others were injured during the operation.
Security officials said the explosives loaded in the vehicle were intended for a major terrorist attack, adding that the timely action by security forces averted significant loss of life and property.
The sources said the security forces displayed a high level of professionalism during the operation, saying every effort was made to protect innocent civilians while successfully neutralising the threat.
