Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in Muscat on Saturday for high-level talks with Omani officials focusing on security in the Strait of Hormuz, regional developments and bilateral relations.
Leading a senior diplomatic delegation, Araghchi was received at Muscat International Airport by senior Omani Foreign Ministry officials and Iran’s ambassador to Oman.
The visit forms part of ongoing consultations between Tehran and Muscat on regional security, with particular emphasis on ensuring maritime stability and the safe passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said the visit builds on months of discussions between the two countries concerning the strategic waterway, which remains central to the Pakistan-brokered Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at ending the Iran-US conflict.
He said the agreement assigns Iran responsibility for establishing routine maritime arrangements and shipping services in the Strait of Hormuz, adding that Tehran remains fully committed to implementing those obligations.
During the visit, Araghchi and his Omani counterpart are expected to discuss operational mechanisms to guarantee the safe transit of commercial vessels through the strategic chokepoint in line with Article 5 of the Islamabad MoU.
The discussions come as Iran continues technical consultations on implementing the agreement.
An Iranian delegation led by Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi recently met in Doha with Qatari and Pakistani facilitators to advance implementation of the Pakistan-brokered accord.
At the same time, a US delegation headed by President Donald Trump’s envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner was also in Doha, where the officials held separate meetings with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani.
