Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif spoke by telephone with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and expressed concern over recent regional tensions, urging restraint and the immediate restoration of peace and stability, according to a statement.

PM called for “restraint and forbearance” and urged all sides to refrain from actions that could undermine progress made toward peace in recent months.

He said a memorandum of understanding provided a lasting foundation for promoting mutual understanding, respect and shared prosperity in the region and beyond, adding that Pakistan would continue to provide all possible cooperation to help restore and maintain regional peace and stability.

President Pezeshkian thanked Pakistan’s leadership for attending the funeral prayers and burial of the late Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, the statement said.

The Iranian president reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to regional peace and expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s support and what he described as its constructive role in that regard.

The two leaders agreed to remain in contact and continue close consultations on issues of mutual interest, including regional peace and stability.

They also reviewed progress on decisions reached during Pezeshkian’s visit to Islamabad last month, the statement said.
