Iran blames US for disrupting the reopening of Hormuz

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Navy said US attacks on Iran were disrupting the gradual reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, warning that any further US intervention would draw a “crushing response.”

The US has said its latest attacks on Iran were in retaliation for Tuesday’s assault by Iran on three cargo ships transiting the strait.

The Guards said transit capacity under Iran’s supervision had recovered to about 50% of pre-war levels over the past two weeks.

It said transit capacity was only being expanded for vessels granted permits to use routes designated by Iran.

Estimates from analysts showed daily traffic in the past two weeks had risen to its highest levels since the war’s outbreak, averaging 40 ships transiting the strait, still well below the pre-conflict average of 125 to 140 daily sailings.

Oil tanker traffic was near a standstill on Thursday, however, as the latest attacks escalated shipping risks, according to data and sources.
