Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is due to travel to Iraq on Tuesday to take part in funeral ceremonies for Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as mourning rites continue across Iran ahead of his burial later this week.
According to Iran’s official IRNA news agency, Pezeshkian will attend a funeral procession in the Iraqi cities of Karbala and Najaf on Wednesday.
Funeral ceremonies for Khamenei and four members of his family began in Tehran on Monday before the coffins were taken to the holy city of Qom, where prayers were held on Tuesday at the Jamkaran Mosque.
The semi-official Tasnim news agency said thousands of mourners gathered at the mosque for the funeral prayers, with footage showing large crowds attending the ceremony.
Khamenei is being mourned alongside his daughter Bushra Hosseini Khamenei, his son-in-law Mesbah Al Hoda Bagheri, his daughter-in-law Zahra Haddad-Adel and his granddaughter Zahra Mohammadi Golpayegani, all of whom were killed with him in joint US-Israeli strikes.
Following the ceremonies in Qom, the coffins are scheduled to be taken to Iraq for additional funeral rites in Najaf and Karbala on Wednesday.
The funeral procession will then return to Iran, where Khamenei is to be laid to rest on Thursday at the Imam Reza Holy Shrine in the northeastern city of Mashhad, one of the country’s most revered religious sites.
The multi-city funeral ceremonies come as Iran continues to observe national mourning following the killing of Khamenei, amid heightened tensions in the region.
