Heavy rains, strong winds and flash floods have caused widespread damage across Pakistan, killing at least nine people and injuring dozens, while bringing relief from an intense heatwave in several regions, officials said on Thursday.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, six people, including three children and a woman, were killed and 19 others injured in separate incidents of roof and wall collapse triggered by heavy rainfall, according to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).
A PDMA spokesperson said a total of 38 houses were damaged across the province, with 36 partially damaged and two completely destroyed due to heavy rains and flash floods.
The severe weather also caused extensive damage in other parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
In Bara’s Zakhakhel area and Lower Chitral, lightning strikes and cloudbursts killed two children and injured three others.
Authorities said 27 houses, two mosques, two shops and a bridge were damaged in the affected areas.
In Upper Dir’s Wari Dara area, 22 female students were injured after lightning struck a religious seminary.
The injured were shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment.
In Haripur, a six-year-old child was swept away by floodwaters in the Dor River, while in Mardan, two boys were injured after a wall collapsed during a windstorm.
Flooding was also reported in Swat, Shangla and Bajaur districts, where swollen streams and rivers blocked several roads and disrupted transportation links.
In Punjab, at least three people were killed and five others injured in Attock after heavy rain and strong winds caused roofs and walls to collapse.
The injured were pulled from the debris and transferred to the district hospital.
Heavy rainfall also lashed several areas of Lahore, including Gulberg, Johar Town, Defence and Model Town, causing electricity outages after multiple power feeders tripped.
Low-lying areas in Sheikhupura’s Sharqpur Sharif, Kamoke, Phalia, Hafizabad and Mandi Bahauddin were inundated, while broken electricity wires sparked safety concerns in Ali Town, Pindi Bhattian.
However, the rainfall brought relief from the intense heat that had gripped much of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab in recent weeks.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast further rainfall accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms across the country’s upper and plain areas.
It said heavy rain is expected in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s upper districts, while the current spell of monsoon weather is likely to continue until July 6.
The weather department also forecast rain in northern Balochistan through July 4 and in upper districts of Sindh on July 3 and 4.
