Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has decided to relaunch the province’s subsidised electric bike scheme for students, announcing that 100,000 e-bikes will be provided over the next year on easy, interest-free instalments.
The decision was taken during a meeting on transport and mass transit chaired by the chief minister, where officials briefed her on the government’s plans to expand green and affordable transport across Punjab.
According to the briefing, the Punjab government will provide a subsidy of Rs70,000 on each electric bike.
Students will be able to obtain an e-bike by paying a down payment of Rs14,000, followed by interest-free monthly instalments of Rs2,100.
The government also announced additional incentives for female students, with the provincial government bearing both the down payment and registration fee to encourage greater participation.
CM Maryam said the government had already introduced electric buses in Punjab and was now promoting local manufacturing of electric vehicles as part of its clean transport agenda.
Officials informed the meeting that electric buses are now being assembled locally, describing it as a major milestone for the province.
In the first phase, 1,500 electric buses will begin operating in 91 tehsils across Punjab.
The chief minister directed authorities to further expand the electric bus network to additional districts in the coming phases.
Separately, in her message on the International Day of Parliamentarism, CM Maryam stressed the importance of upholding the Constitution, strengthening the rule of law, promoting democratic values, and working collectively for public welfare.
