A special medical board has exhumed the body of an 18-year-old woman allegedly beaten to death by her husband in Surjani Town, collecting samples to determine the exact cause of her death, in a significant development in the case.
The exhumation was carried out at a graveyard in Bashir Chowk on court orders, under the supervision of Police Surgeon Karachi Dr Summaiya Syed.
The deceased’s family members, investigation officials, and lady police personnel were present at the scene.
Misbah Shaheryar died on June 9 at her parents’ residence.
Her body was brought to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital from Saiful Marri Goth in Surjani Town bearing marks of injury on the head and other parts of the body.
However, the family did not permit doctors to conduct a post-mortem examination at the time and took the body away for burial in the presence of police.
Her brother Usman told the media that Misbah had married Shaheryar of her own free will, about a week before Ramazan.
He alleged she was subsequently tortured by her in-laws over a dowry dispute.
Her husband, Shaheryar Butt, has already been arrested on the family’s complaint.
The medical report from the exhumed samples will now be used to determine the actual cause of death.
