Japanese Consul General in Karachi Hattori Masaru on Wednesday formally presented 110 books to Greenwich University Karachi on behalf of the Tokyo Foundation, as part of the cultural outreach initiative known as the Read Japan Project.
The handover ceremony, held at the university’s Karachi campus, marked the latest step in the project’s mission to promote a deeper understanding of Japan across the world.
The donated books cover a range of subjects including Japanese history, arts, politics, literature and philosophy.
Addressing the ceremony, Consul General Hattori underlined the importance of academic and cultural exchange, saying such initiatives strengthened the longstanding ties between Japan and Pakistan.
He expressed hope that the books would prove a valuable resource for students, academics and researchers with an interest in Japan.
Pro Vice Chancellor Dr Naveed Mughal welcomed the gesture, noting that the Japanese Consulate in Karachi had consistently supported and collaborated with Greenwich University.
He said Pakistan as a nation could learn from Japan’s model of discipline and national development, calling the Japanese among the most organised nations in the world. He thanked the consulate and the Tokyo Foundation for the donation and expressed hope that such collaboration would continue in the future.
The Read Japan Project, run by the Tokyo Foundation with financial support from the Nippon Foundation, has been supplying English-language books to libraries and research institutions around the world since 2008, reflecting Japan’s commitment to knowledge-sharing and cultural diplomacy.
