At least 16 militants, including two key commanders, were killed in a joint operation by the Pakistan Army, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police and the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) in Bannu, security sources said on Sunday.

According to security officials, the operation was launched after intelligence reports indicated the presence of militants belonging to the banned Fitna Al Khwarij group in the area.

A heavy exchange of fire took place between security forces and the militants during the operation.

The sources said that 16 militants, including two senior commanders belonging to an outlawed group, were killed in the operation.

Two police personnel were also martyred during the exchange of fire, the sources added.

Security officials said a clearance operation was continuing in the area and efforts to eliminate terrorism were being intensified further.
