Robin Hood, one of New York City’s largest charitable organisations, has received a $100 million donation from the parents of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos to establish the Jackie Bezos Endowment for Early Childhood.

The gift will fund education and early childhood development programmes across the city, according to a report in Fortune.

Jackie Bezos, Jeff Bezos’s mother, previously served on Robin Hood’s board.

The donation aligns with the priorities of Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who has championed free, universal early childhood education starting at age two.

The mayor’s office confirmed that expanding childcare citywide will require coordination among government, families, labour, philanthropy, and community organisations.

Robin Hood, founded in 1988 by hedge fund billionaire Paul Tudor Jones, supports more than 300 nonprofits in New York City, helping tens of thousands with housing, education, and pandemic relief.

CEO Richard Buery Jr. said philanthropic contributions complement public funding, helping the city deploy resources more effectively.

Mamdani, a progressive mayor known for challenging the ultrawealthy, recently proposed a pied-à-terre tax and skipped the Met Gala to advocate for affordability.

The mayor has partnered with the charitable organisation on other childcare initiatives since taking office in January.

Earlier this year, Mamdani’s office joined with the charity to carry out a citywide parent survey to help gauge needs and experiences around childcare.

The fresh announcement comes as New York faces a $12 billion budget shortfall.

In response, the mayor’s updated FY2027 budget includes nearly $60 million for childcare and K-12 education support, which Mamdani said restores fiscal stability without raising taxes or cutting essential services.
