International Labour Day, also known as May Day, is being observed across the world, including Pakistan, on Friday to reaffirm the commitment to protecting workers’ rights.

The day is recognised as a tribute to the working class and is promoted by the international labour movement, with May 1 marked as a public holiday in several countries, including Pakistan.

Events such as conferences, seminars, marches and awareness walks are being organised by public and private institutions to highlight the importance of labour rights and to honour workers’ contributions.

International Labour Day is observed in memory of labour struggles in the United States, including incidents linked to protests during the late 19th and early 20th century labour movements.

In Pakistan, the first labour policy was introduced in 1972, declaring May 1 as an official holiday and laying the foundation for welfare measures such as the Social Security system, Old Age Benefits Scheme and Workers Welfare Fund.

The day is intended to renew efforts to promote dignity, safety and fair treatment for workers across all sectors.
