Iran warns of Hormuz closure if US blockade continues

Amid conflicting reports on the crucial Strait of Hormuz, Tehran warned the waterway could be closed again if a US blockade continues.

The Iranian threat follows an earlier statement by US President Donald Trump, who declared that Washington would maintain its restrictions on the Strait until a broader agreement is reached with Iran.

Iran’s parliamentary speaker, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, said early Saturday that “if the blockade continues, the Strait of Hormuz will not remain open.”

His comments followed Iran’s announcement on Friday that the Strait had been fully reopened to commercial shipping.

However, US President Donald Trump said American restrictions on Iranian vessels and ports would remain in place “in full force” until Tehran reaches a deal with Washington.

Qalibaf also dismissed Trump’s earlier claims regarding Iran’s maritime policy, accusing him of making a series of false statements in a short period.

He reiterated that passage through the Strait would only be allowed via designated routes and under Iranian authorisation, warning that “whether the strait remains open or closed will be determined on the battlefield, not on social media.”

Iran has argued that the US blockade violates a recent ceasefire agreement, while Washington maintains its measures are a response to Iranian restrictions on shipping during regional hostilities.

A maritime data firm, Kpler, said vessel movement through the Strait remained limited, with ships operating only through corridors requiring Iranian approval, underscoring continued uncertainty despite official announcements.
