A senior Iranian official has warned that the United States’ imposition of a naval blockade on Iranian ports threatens regional and international peace.
In a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Iran’s ambassador to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, condemned the move as a flagrant violation of the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In his letter, Iravani denounced what he called a provocative step by Washington, following the announcement of the measure by US Central Command on April 12.
“The imposition of a naval blockade is a gross violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he wrote.
The Iranian official argued that the move breaches Article 2(4) of the UN Charter, which prohibits the threat or use of force, and amounts to a clear act of aggression under international law.
Iravani said the blockade also contravenes the principles of maritime law by interfering with Iran’s sovereign rights and disrupting legitimate international shipping.
He added that the United States was unlawfully obstructing maritime traffic to and from Iranian ports, thereby infringing on the rights of third states and global trade.
Tehran “firmly and in the strongest possible terms rejects and condemns” the measure, he said, stressing that Iran reserves the right to take “necessary and proportionate” action to safeguard its sovereignty and national interests within the framework of international law.
Holding Washington fully responsible, the envoy warned that the United States would bear the consequences of what he described as an internationally wrongful act, including its impact on regional stability.
He also urged the United Nations to act, calling on the Security Council and the secretary-general to condemn the blockade, prevent further escalation and press the United States to immediately reverse its actions.
