The United States is expected to host negotiations between Israel and Lebanon in Washington next week at the ambassador level, as diplomatic contacts around the conflict continue to develop.

Lebanon has reportedly offered direct talks with Israel on the condition of a ceasefire.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has signalled acceptance of talks but reiterated that Israel will not agree to a ceasefire and will continue operations against Hezbollah.

Following discussions around potential negotiations, the tempo of military operations has reportedly decreased, with no attacks on Beirut reported since a large-scale strike on Wednesday.

It remains unclear whether the slowdown is intentional.

Netanyahu has also welcomed the Lebanese government’s decision to demilitarise Beirut.

The Lebanese government has indicated steps to assert control over the capital and reduce Hezbollah’s presence there as part of its position ahead of talks.
