The Trump administration has unveiled its 2027 federal budget, proposing $65.8 billion for shipbuilding and military expansions while cutting funding for health, NASA, and domestic agencies, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The Pentagon portion of the request includes 34 ships, including a new class of battleship named after Trump and new frigates announced last year, along with funding for the Golden Dome missile shield.

The budget also includes raises for military personnel based on rank.

The Justice Department would see a 13% increase, enabling stronger immigration enforcement and the hiring of over 300 Drug Enforcement Administration agents.

About $150 million is earmarked to rebuild Alcatraz as a secure prison facility.

For the Department of Homeland Security, funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection would be maintained, while other programs, including FEMA, DHS cybersecurity, and election security work, face cuts.

The budget also proposes partially privatising the Transportation Security Administration for small airports.

Health and Human Services would receive $111.1 billion, a reduction of $15.8 billion.

Cuts include $5 billion from the National Institutes of Health, including programs on racial and transgender health disparities.

Funding for nutrition services and CDC food safety initiatives would continue under the administration’s “Make America Healthy Again” agenda.

The budget projects $406 billion in tariff revenue for 2026, more than double 2025 levels, with forecasts reaching $500 billion by 2029—figures independent analysts say may be overly optimistic.

NASA would see a 23% reduction, with funding prioritised for lunar missions while school science and technology programs would be cut.

The White House stated the move focuses on “exciting, ambitious space missions” rather than STEM subsidies.

Reactions have split along party lines. Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said Congress awaits further details on the 2027 budget and a supplemental $200 billion request for military operations in Iran.

Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) criticised cuts to health and research, saying military spending should not come at the expense of Americans’ well-being.
