Firefighters were struggling to douse a fire that broke out in a suprestore in Karachi’s Clifton area on Monday.

Sources said that the fire erupted in Imtiaz Store in the early morning, which was quickly brought under control. No injuries have been reported in the incident.

According to Chief Fire Officer Humayun Khan, the fire brigade received the alert around 6am, prompting fire tenders to be immediately dispatched from the Saddar fire station.

“The fire initially started in the basement of the store and was brought under control,” Humayun Khan said.

“However, flames were also observed at various locations on the ground floor, and extinguishing efforts were ongoing.”

He added that no staff members were present inside the store at the time of the incident.

Initial reports suggest the fire started near an ATM, and the store management had initially attempted to control it themselves.

Humayun Khan stated that the false ceiling contributed to the spread of flames and smoke, adding that the lack of proper ventilation caused smoke to accumulate, creating challenges for the rescue teams.

Separately, Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab told the media that all individuals had been safely evacuated from the building, and no one remained inside.

He added that rescue and firefighting operations were being closely monitored, and efforts were ongoing to fully contain the situation.

“Such incidents can happen anywhere,” he said, “but fire safety audits are being carried out across the city to prevent similar accidents in the future.”
