The Punjab government has announced a series of extraordinary austerity and administrative measures in response to economic pressures triggered by the ongoing regional conflict and an emerging petroleum supply crisis.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz approved the measures as part of a provincial effort to manage fuel consumption and stabilise essential supplies.

Under the new directives, official fuel allocations for provincial ministers have been suspended, while fuel allowances for government officers’ vehicles have been reduced by 50 per cent until the petroleum crisis subsides.

Additional protocol vehicles assigned to ministers and senior officials have also been banned. Only one security vehicle will be allowed to accompany them.

The provincial government has also decided to introduce a work-from-home policy in government offices, with only essential staff required to attend offices physically.

In a separate step to reduce transport and energy consumption, schools, colleges and universities across Punjab will remain closed from March 10 to March 31.

Educational institutions have been allowed to conduct online classes, while examinations will continue according to schedule.

The chief minister also directed the formation of district petroleum monitoring committees to oversee the supply and distribution of fuel products.

The Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) has been tasked with developing a track-and-trace system for petroleum products.

All government outdoor events have been suspended, while the Lahore Horse and Cattle Show has been postponed.

CM Maryam also instructed authorities to strictly monitor transport fares and food prices to prevent profiteering during the crisis.

Appealing to the public, the chief minister urged citizens to avoid unnecessary purchases and hoarding, limit outdoor gatherings and demonstrate unity and responsibility during the difficult period.

She warned that strict action would be taken against anyone attempting to exploit the situation for financial gain.
