The Pakistan Navy has launched Operation Muhafiz-ul-Bahr to safeguard national shipping and maritime trade in response to the evolving regional maritime security environment and potential disruptions to critical sea lanes, the military said on Sunday.
According to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the operation aims to counter multidimensional threats to maritime commerce and ensure the uninterrupted flow of national energy supplies.
The initiative focuses on protecting Sea Lines of Communication (SLOCs) and securing vital maritime routes that are critical for Pakistan’s economy. Nearly 90 per cent of the country’s trade is conducted through sea routes, making maritime security essential for sustaining economic activity.
As part of the operation, Pakistan Navy warships have begun escort missions for commercial vessels to ensure their safe passage.
The ISPR said PN escort operations are being conducted in close coordination with the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC), while naval authorities are actively monitoring and controlling the movement of merchant ships to ensure secure transit.
Currently, Pakistan Navy ships are escorting two merchant vessels, one of which is scheduled to arrive in Karachi later on Sunday.
The navy said it remains fully prepared to respond to emerging maritime security challenges and reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding national shipping as well as maintaining regional maritime security.
