A police officer was killed during the ongoing Cholistan Desert Jeep Rally in Bahawalpur after being struck by a racing jeep at the Jamgarh mid-point on the track, officials said on Friday.
The incident occurred at Qila Jamgarh’s mid-point, where the officer was performing security duties. Footage of the accident, which has since surfaced, shows the officer coming in front of the jeep as it crossed the mid-point during the race.
The deceased was identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector Bashir Joiya. Rescue and police teams rushed to the scene immediately after the incident, officials said.
Police authorities said a full investigation was underway to determine the circumstances of the accident. Security arrangements for the rally are also being reviewed to prevent similar incidents.
The rally is being held in the Cholistan desert near Bahawalpur.
Earlier, the first round of the prepared category was conducted over a 236-kilometre track, featuring 40 racers, including two foreign participants.
Raza Saeed, winner of the qualifying round, started first on the track. In the opening round, Faisal Shadi Khel clinched first position by completing the course in one hour and 43 minutes. Jaffar Magassi secured second place with a time of one hour and 48 minutes, while Hussain Asif finished third after covering the distance in one hour and 51 minutes.
Officials said the rally continued under tightened safety measures as authorities assessed the incident and reviewed on-ground protocols.
