Former Pakistan Army chief General (retd) Qamar Javed Bajwa was injured after slipping and falling at his residence and was shifted to the hospital, according to television reports citing family sources.
Local and international media outlets confirmed the incident through the former army chief’s family.
Reports said Bajwa slipped in the bathroom early Wednesday morning and sustained multiple injuries. He was taken to a hospital in Rawalpindi, where he is currently under treatment.
Journalist Irshad Bhatti, quoting family sources, said Bajwa suffered severe injuries due to the fall and sustained wounds on different parts of his body. He added that a head injury caused Bajwa to briefly lose consciousness.
Doctors later confirmed that Bajwa had regained full consciousness and had met both of his sons. However, he remains admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) and has not yet been declared fully out of danger.
Journalist Zahid Gishkori also confirmed the incident, citing family sources.
In a post on social media platform X, Gishkori said Bajwa was immediately shifted to the Military Hospital in Rawalpindi, where doctors examined his injuries.
He said Bajwa’s two sons had arrived in Pakistan and were present with him at the hospital.
According to family sources, a medical team is monitoring his condition, which has improved, though doctors have advised continued hospitalisation for further observation.
Bajwa was appointed as the Pakistan Army’s 16th chief in November 2016 by then prime minister Nawaz Sharif.
Near the completion of his initial three-year term, the government of former prime minister Imran Khan granted him a three-year extension in August 2019.
He retired in November 2022 after completing six years as army chief.
