Rescue operation at Gul Plaza enters seventh day as 67 bodies recovered

The rescue and search operation at Karachi’s Gul Plaza has entered its seventh day, with 67 bodies and human remains recovered so far.

Authorities say rescue teams are continuing efforts to locate more victims trapped under the debris.

Last night, small flare-ups of fire were reported in different parts of the building, but firefighters quickly controlled them before further spread.

Karachi Police Surgeon Dr Samia Syed stated that most of the remains are charred, making DNA sampling difficult. So far, post-mortems for 62 of the 67 recovered bodies and remains have been completed.

Firefighter officials noted that the search operation is largely complete, but removing the remaining debris may take two to four more days.

On Thursday, the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) and Pakistan Engineering Council inspected Gul Plaza and declared it structurally unsafe.

The technical committee recommended that the building be demolished after the completion of rescue operations.

Gul Plaza, spanning 8,124 square yards with 1,102 shops, was engulfed in flames on the night of the fire, resulting in the extensive loss of property and lives.
