Indian court convicts Hurriyat leader Asiya Andrabi

Delhi court has acquitted Hurriyat leader and head of the Dukhtar-e-Millat organisation Asiya Andrabi of charges of terrorism, terrorist financing and membership of a terrorist organisation, but convicted her of conspiracy and abetment charges, according to Kashmir Media Service.

In the Delhi court hearing, Judge Chandrajit Singh ruled that the terrorism charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act were not proven.

The court acquitted Asiya Andrabi under Section 20 (membership of a terrorist organisation), Section 17 (financing of terrorism) and Section 121 (waging war against the state). The court clarified that there is no witness on record to prove her direct involvement in any terrorist act.

The court, while explaining the reason for reaching this conclusion, said that Asiya Andrabi’s speeches, interviews and social media posts reflect a coherent plan, which encourages illegal occupation, separatism, praise of militias and resistance in Kashmiri areas.

Hurriyat leaders Fehmida Sufi and Nahida Nasreen have also been found guilty in the same case, while the court is expected to announce the sentences on January 17.

According to reports, the case was under trial in a special court of the Indian National Investigation Agency, where the verdict was pronounced against the Kashmiri women freedom fighters.

Kashmir Media Service says that the case is being described as political in nature and is being linked to the ongoing situation in Kashmir.

The founder of the women’s organisation Dukhtar e Millat was arrested in April 2018 and has been in detention for almost 8 years, and the report also states that Asiya Andrabi’s husband, Ashiq Hussain, has been in Indian jails for the past almost three decades on various charges.
