Iran accuses US, Israel of fomenting violence amid deadly protests

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has accused the United States and Israel of fuelling violence in the country, claiming that remarks by US President Donald Trump encouraging intervention motivated “terrorist elements” to target protesters and security forces.

Trump has repeatedly warned of possible US military action in Iran if protests turn violent, claiming Washington has “very strong options” while maintaining contact with Iranian opposition leaders.

State media report over 100 security personnel have been killed in recent days, while opposition sources say hundreds of protesters have also died.

Iran maintains open communication with the United States through direct and Swiss-mediated channels, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said, but emphasised that diplomacy must be “based on mutual interests and respect” rather than one-sided demands.

Baghaei described the unrest as a “terrorist war against the Iranian people” and accused foreign actors of distributing firearms among protesters.

Araghchi said protests that began in late December over economic grievances were initially peaceful and addressed through dialogue with various professional and trade groups.

Violence escalated on January 8 when armed groups entered the protests, allegedly emboldened by Trump’s remarks.

The foreign minister cited evidence of US and Israeli involvement, including claims that Mossad operatives were active in Iran, and warned that Tehran would pursue accountability through international institutions.

“We pursue this involvement and hold those contributing to the fatalities with their instigation responsible,” Araghchi said.
