Polio risk persists in Lahore as virus detected again in sewage

The risk of polio remains in Lahore after the virus was once again detected in the city’s sewage system, despite ongoing immunisation campaigns, health department sources said on Thursday.

According to officials in the Punjab Health Department, poliovirus was confirmed in sewage samples collected from Outfall Road and Gulshan Ravi areas.

However, samples taken from Multan Road and Mahmood Booti tested negative for the virus.

The environmental samples were collected from Lahore’s sewage network towards the end of 2025 as part of routine surveillance aimed at tracking the presence of poliovirus, the sources said.

Health officials said the latest detection indicates that poliovirus continues to circulate in parts of the provincial capital, raising concerns about gaps in vaccination coverage and the effectiveness of ongoing anti-polio campaigns.
