The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) on Thursday issued a province-wide alert as dense fog and worsening smog threaten major urban and rural areas.
PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia directed all commissioners and deputy commissioners to take timely measures and keep the public informed about potential hazards.
According to the PDMA, severe fog and smog are expected across the plains, including Lahore, Gujranwala, Sheikhupura, Kasur, Nankana Sahib, Faisalabad, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Sahiwal, Layyah, Kot Addu, Multan, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, and Khanpur.
The DG warned that smog can trigger respiratory illnesses and other health problems, particularly affecting children and the elderly.
He added that dense fog may lead to an increase in road accidents.
Authorities have ordered strict action against the burning of crop residue and waste, with cases to be registered against violators.
A crackdown will also target smoke-emitting vehicles and industries. Burning solid waste, tyres, plastic, polythene bags, rubber, and leather remains banned across the province.
Kathia stressed the need for public cooperation, saying joint efforts by government departments and citizens are essential to reduce smog. He also instructed officials to run awareness campaigns and warned that negligence by any officer would result in action.
The PDMA maintained that reducing environmental pollution is key to preventing diseases and improving public health.
