PTI criticises govt over IMF report, cites corruption as barrier to investment

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Taimur Saleem Jhagra on Saturday accused the government of systemic corruption and mismanagement, following the release of the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) Governance and Corruption Diagnostic Assessment (GCDA) report.

Speaking at a press conference alongside former Sindh Governor Mohammad Zubair, Jhagra said the current government had assumed office with a “tainted mandate” and demanded an explanation for the three-month delay in releasing the IMF report.

He called for a formal investigation into its findings, which highlighted massive irregularities in sectors including wheat and sugar, amounting to over Rs5,300 billion.

“The report questions the integrity of judges and judicial staff, noting that investors are wary due to the perceived corruption within the judiciary,” Jhagra said.

“Supreme Court itself is no longer perceived as supreme, as an external force exerts undue influence, and transfer culture is used as a form of punishment for judges.”

The PTI leader also criticised promises of foreign investment under the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), saying no substantial inflows had materialised.

He claimed that the Election Commission of Pakistan had also been rendered ineffective, further undermining institutional trust.

Highlighting the IMF report, Jhagra noted: “The judicial sector, which is organisationally complex, cannot reliably enforce contracts or protect property rights due to inefficiency, outdated laws, and compromised integrity of judges and personnel. This has directly hindered capital investment in the country.”
