JI raises voice in Sindh Assembly against ‘unjust’ e-challan fines

Amid media and public criticism on the recently introduced e-challam system, the Jamaat-e-Islami on Thursday raised the issue in the Sindh Assembly, with MPA Mohammed Farooq submitting a resolution against what he termed “unjust fines” and “discrimination against Karachi’s citizens”.

Farooq said that citizens of Karachi were being punished as the PPP government was not doing anything to fix broken roads, install traffic signs, and improve the poor road infrastructure.

“Stop this injustice against the people. Hefty fines are being imposed on poor motorcyclists. The Sindh government must immediately withdraw the notification,” he demanded.

He pointed out that a fine for traffic violation is Rs200 in Punjab, but Rs5,000 is charged for the same offence in Sindh, questioning, “What kind of justice is this?”

“On the one hand, roads are in terrible condition, and on the other, citizens are being fined through e-challans — Karachi residents are being punished twice,” he said, adding that the e-challan system should serve as a warning, not a source of torment.

The JI lawmaker urged the traffic police to fix their system instead of harassing motorists and called for the use of cameras to catch criminals rather than ordinary citizens.

Farooq also said he rejected the discriminatory treatment of Karachi’s citizens and demanded that the government ensure fairness and transparency in traffic enforcement.
