X owner Elon Musk has been exploring the possibility of bringing back the short-form video app Vine in light of the recent TikTok ban, media reports said.
This consideration comes as video content continues to dominate online platforms, with services like YouTube, Instagram, and Snapchat thriving in this arena.
Originally launched in 2013 and later acquired by Twitter, Vine changed the landscape of short-form content by allowing users to produce six-second videos.
Despite its initial popularity, Vine was discontinued after eight years due to decreasing advertising revenue and fierce competition from platforms like Instagram, which provided similar yet more versatile features. TikTok eventually built upon Vine’s concept, emerging as a frontrunner in the short-form video market.
Musk has hinted at the possible revival of Vine, mentioning that his team is “looking into” the idea. This follows a user poll conducted in 2022 that showed significant public interest in the app’s comeback.
If revived, integrating Vine into X as a feature similar to Instagram’s Reels could enhance its growth by capitalising on X’s existing user base.
The potential revival of Vine is timely due to the current TikTok ban, although the ban is anticipated to be short-lived. TikTok has expressed intentions to work alongside US officials to address existing concerns, and President-elect Donald Trump, who is set to take office again on January 20, has suggested that efforts are underway to restore the app.
