Kyle Walker seeks to leave Manchester City, reveals Pep Guardiola

Manchester City Captain Kyle Walker has expressed a desire to leave the club, Manager Pep Guardiola said on Saturday as the English Premier League team runs through a bad patch following the charges of alleged financial rule breaches.

The 34-year-old defender was not included in City’s squad for their 8-0 FA Cup victory over Salford.

“Two days ago, Kyle asked to explore options for playing abroad as he approaches the end of his career,” Guardiola stated.

“In his [Walker’s] mind, he would like to explore it, to go to another country, to play the last years [somewhere else] for many reasons. For that reason, I prefer playing other players whose mind is here.”

Walker has played a pivotal role in City’s success, contributing to the club’s haul of 17 trophies, including six Premier League titles and a Champions League title, since his £50 million transfer from Tottenham in 2017.

After City’s treble victory in 2023, Walker was close to joining Bayern Munich but ultimately opted to sign a contract extension that will keep him at the club until 2026.

Guardiola commented on Walker’s significance, stating, “We cannot comprehend the success we’ve enjoyed over these years without Kyle. It’s impossible.

He joined us eight years ago, and since then, we have consistently won. He has been crucial for both the national team and our squad.“
