English middle-distance runner Keely Hodgkinson has announced her intention to break the world record for the 800 metres at a new event called the ‘Keely Klassic,’ scheduled for February 15.
The existing record of 1:55.82 was set by Slovenia’s Jolanda Ceplak on March 3, 2002—the very day Hodgkinson was born.
The reigning Olympic champion in the 800 metres revealed the details of the event, which will take place at Birmingham’s Utilita Arena, shortly after receiving her Sports Personality of the Year award at a ceremony where her coaches, Trevor Painter and Jenny Meadows, were also honoured as Coaches of the Year.
“I’m excited about the chance to break the world record—this is a significant opportunity for me to elevate my career while giving back to the sport that has contributed so much to my life,” Hodgkinson said.
The 22-year-old athlete’s previous season was cut short after the Paris event due to a “small injury.” The Keely Klassic is officially recognised as a World Athletics Indoor Tour bronze-level meeting and will take place the week before the British Indoor Championships at the same venue.
The Utilita Arena’s event listing promises an exciting day featuring “marquee British track and field stars” joining Hodgkinson for various competitions, along with a “unique, immersive experience for fans.”
