The announcement of winter school holidays in Islamabad and Punjab is expected soon. The Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) is likely to release the schedule for Islamabad schools and colleges in the coming weeks.
Traditionally, the FDE declares a one-week winter break during the coldest period. However, due to a delay in the onset of typical cold weather this year, the break is anticipated to run from December 21 to December 29, with schools reopening on December 30. There is a possibility of an extension until December 31, pushing the reopening date to January 1, 2025.
Following the winter break, the FDE is expected to review school timings.
Separately, the Punjab School Education Department is also expected to announce its winter break schedule shortly. In Punjab, schools typically close for two weeks in December due to harsh weather conditions.
This year, the winter break in Punjab is likely to begin on December 21, with schools resuming on January 1. However, the final decision will depend on prevailing weather conditions. December in Punjab often sees heavy fog and temperatures dropping to 7-8 degrees Celsius, making it difficult for students to attend classes.
Last year, the provincial government initially announced holidays from December 18 to December 31, but later extended them until January 9, 2024.
