David Lavery, a former Canadian Forces soldier known as “Canadian Dave” during his time in Afghanistan, has been captured by the Taliban.
Lavery, who operates the private security firm Raven Rae Consulting Services in Kabul, was reportedly apprehended shortly after arriving in Kabul on Monday. The news was revealed by anonymous sources speaking to CTV National News.
His current location is unknown, but he is believed to be in Taliban custody.
Global Affairs Canada has acknowledged an incident involving a Canadian citizen in Afghanistan and is providing consular assistance, but has not confirmed whether Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s office has been informed.
Lavery gained significant recognition in 2021 for his crucial role in evacuating over 100 Afghan nationals during the chaotic withdrawal from Kabul, after Canadian Embassy staff had already departed.
He coordinated the evacuation of over 1,000 individuals seeking refuge in Canada, advising them to wear red and identify themselves to “Canadian Dave” for assistance amidst the turmoil at Hamid Karzai International Airport.
Sources interviewed by CTV News expressed surprise at his capture, noting the Taliban’s likely awareness of Lavery’s extensive and well-known work in Afghanistan over the years.
