Mexican general appointed to lead UN observer mission in India, Pakistan

The United Nations has announced the appointment of Major General Ramon Guardado Sanchez from Mexico as the new Head of Mission and Chief Military Observer for the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP).

His role will involve overseeing the cease-fire in the disputed region of Jammu and Kashmir.

Major General Guardado takes over from Rear Admiral Guillermo Rios of Argentina, who has been acknowledged for his contributions to UN peacekeeping efforts.

Currently, Guardado serves as the Commissioner of the National Guard in Yucatan and has a distinguished career in the Mexican Army, including positions related to national defense and peace operations.

His previous roles include Liaison to Congress for the National Defence Joint Staff and Commanding Officer of the Mexican Peace Operations Joint Training Centre.

Guardado has also served with the UN Verification Mission in Colombia and holds advanced degrees in Military Administration and National Security.

UNMOGIP, established in January 1949, is one of the oldest UN missions and is based in Rawalpindi, comprising 44 military observers and 75 international civilian personnel.
