Renowned religious scholar Mufti Tariq Masood has denied reports of gunfire at him in Karachi’s Malir area, clarifying that he was safe.
“Rumours of attack at me have been circulating. By the grace of God, I am absolutely fine,” he said in a Facebook post on Thursday. “There is no truth to such reports.”
Earlier, viral reports surfaced regarding gunfire aimed at the vehicle of Masood in Karachi, prompting action from both the police and the Federal Investigation Agency.
According to circulating information on social media, the incident occurred near Ghaghar Phatak in the Malir area, where shots were reportedly fired at Masood’s car.
Some posts claim that the driver was killed in the shooting while the scholar sustained serious injuries.
In response to the shooting rumours, several users expressed scepticism and stated that the vehicle in question does not belong to Masood and that no such shooting incident occurred, labelling the “news as fake.”
Another social media user stated that the reports of an attack on the religious scholar and gunfire at his vehicle were “baseless,” stating that there was “no truth” to such claims. “Alhamdulillah, Mufti Sahib is safe,” the user added.
In response to the dissemination of false information regarding attacks on scholars in Karachi, the government has decided to take action against those spreading these rumours. Police have contacted the FIA to address the issue of misinformation circulating on social media.
Police have stated that all accounts spreading rumours would be handed over to the FIA. Over the past two days, false rumours of gunfire targeting scholars’ vehicles have been circulating in various areas of Malir. Multiple images of scholars and fabricated pictures of gunfire have gone viral on social media, causing “unnecessary panic.” Authorities have vowed to take strict action against all such miscreants.

Following the uproar on social media, a FIR for “blasphemy” was registered against Masood at a police station in Karachi. In response, he released a video statement on social media, clarifying his words and issuing an apology for any misunderstanding.
